![]() But for Henry to even have a chance, he has to convince a group of teenagers that dead doesn’t mean helpless. As the police chase false leads, Henry comes to realize that he’s his sister’s only hope. He knows who did it, where she’s being held and what will happen if the kidnappers don’t get what they want. Is Henry’s group kept isolated because of their abilities? If so, are they considered gifted or seen only as a potential bad influence?īefore Henry can reach any conclusions, he witnesses his sister being kidnapped. Soon, Henry learns that his new friends all possess unique skills for making themselves noticed by the living. After all, what could he possibly have in common with a Mohawk-sporting punker from the 80s, a roller skater from the 70s with a thing for kimonos, and an English “rocker” from the 60s? Henry can hear the other groups but he never sees them. Since he drowned, Henry has remained isolated with the same group of teenagers and he keeps wondering why. ![]() ![]() ![]() Thank you Book Nerd Tours for organizing this amazing tour. I’m so excited to be apart of the Jump When Ready blog tour. ![]() ![]() Warga’s work with her characters and with the story is phenomenal. ![]() If Quinn ever wants Cora to forgive her, she will have to figure out a way to change the events of the past. Since Cora and her sister happen to be Muslim, Parker shot Cora’s sister and she died. Quinn’s brother, Parker joined a white-supremacist group and chose to bring guns to school. It’s just that something awful, and something that is becoming more common, just happened. Typical middle school girls, right? Absolutely. They have been best friends for a long time. “Sometimes it’s like I get in trouble in school because I’m always thinking when I’m supposed to be learning.” Cora is on the Quiz Bowl team, is starting to have a crush on a teammate, and argues with her older sister. One of my favorite quotes in the book comes from Quinn. ![]() Quinn plays soccer, she is creative, and thoughtful. Warga has created two characters, Quinn and Cora, who reflect the type of young women that we see in middle schools in the 21st century. I am grateful to NetGalley and Balzer+Bray for the opportunity to write this review. ![]() The Shape of Thunder by Jasmine Warga is truly a book that speaks to issues we need to face today. ![]() ![]() ![]() Avoiding Dryden, as translators are tempted to do, is bound to take one further from the Latin. Dryden’s beginning has the advantage of a word-for-word metaphrase of the Virgil-“Arma virumque cano”-and in the same rhythm too. Its opening, “Arms, and the man I sing,” is itself a famous quotation, as the title of Wilfred Owen’s poem, “Arms and the Boy” suggests. And Dryden’s translation of The Aeneid (1697) remains an unmatched achievement. The Earl of Surrey invented blank verse-unrhymed iambic pentameter-for his translation of books 2 and 4 in the mid-1550s. The Aeneid holds a special place in the history of English translation. The Aeneid seems to be something major translators turn to only when they have run out of Homer or Dante and still need something meaty to get their chops into. The shopworn copy of blurbers, “long-awaited,” leans, for once, in the direction of understatement. Robert Fagles, after his acclaimed translations of The Iliad and The Odyssey, has now turned his attention to this more problematic work. Robert Fitzgerald’s elegant rendition of The Aeneid, the standard text, has been the reigning champion for more than 20 years and can buy a drink without getting carded. If that is so, we are in need of a new Aeneid. Thomas Jefferson’s assertion that “every generation needs a new revolution” has long been adopted by translators it is a commonplace that every generation needs a new Homer, a new Virgil, a new Dante. ![]() ![]() The Aeneid by Virgil, translated by Robert Fagles, Viking, $40 ![]() ![]() ![]() As a biology teacher, she found satisfaction in molding her students into future leaders. When Merit gets randomly attacked by a rogue vampire while walking across campus, she gets “saved” by a different bunch of vampires who turn her into one, and thusly is introduced to the wider supernatural world of Chicago (as well as a bunch of sexy vampire dudes). ![]() Some Girls Bite is the first in a series, centering on a grad student named Merit. I might’ve swung a little too far into ‘light’ territory here. See, after the gory cynicism of The Scarlet Gospels, I figured I’d go for something lighter, so I picked Chloe Neill’s novel more or less at random off of the Overdrive app (technically it’s under horror?) and … here we are. Some Girls Bite is one of those books that shows just why I made those arbitrary rules up in the first place. If there’s a lady in leather pants on the cover, it’s Paranormal Romance. If there’s a dude in a trenchcoat on the cover, it’s Urban Fantasy. Book Review: Some Girls Bite, by Chloe Neill ![]() ![]() ![]() But, To Die For was different from the multitude of Anne Boleyn novels out there. May be a good summer read, and I could get my Anne on. How could it be worthwhile when I already know how the story is going to end, and there isn't any way they could change it? But, since I had the opportunity to read the book through Simon & Schuster's Galley Grab program, I thought it would be worthwhile to at least check out. Sure, it's hard to not enjoy the soap opera-like life of Henry VIII with his six wives and countless mistresses, but really- enough already! This was exactly what I was thinking when I saw To Die For. Not only is Anne being overused, but so is Henry VIII and his entire Tudor court. ![]() Mistress Bolyen has been explored so much lately in popular fiction, TV and nonfiction lately that I'm getting a little sick of her. I was actually about to start a heavy book when I decided this was the right time for The Guncle. But I have also found myself quite disappointed as many books are very heavy with little payoff. Don’t get me wrong, there have been some wonderful books. I also read The Guncle at just the right time-I haven’t loved a lot of books I’ve read this year.
